Ok - So this weekend - Saturday to be precise - I succumbed to the fashion trendy tech market brand named Apple - and bought myself (and my family of course) a piece of gadget history. We now join the iPod crowd. I've been using iTunes for almost a year now and it's a natural extension right? Our old Sony "bookcase" stereo (purchased back in '92) won't play CD's anymore and in fact was only good for a radio...our DVD / VCR player died playing DVD's...So we upgraded to a "Digital Home Theater" system - and now that we have our entire music collection digital anyway... we can listen to anything we have at the click of the magic "click-wheel" on the pod... Miles and Kate, Lisa and I are enjoying Nemo again... and dancing around the living room like fools... It's good to be a kid.

Pox or Not?
Chicken Pox ??
We aren't sure what this was... another mysterious childhood rash? Some bad banana's? or Chicken Pox - we'll never know - but we did end up staying home this week, Tuesday and Wednesday - by Thursday - all better... We didn't know how bad it was going to get, but as you can see Kate was pretty much covered with these red dots. She never seemed to be bothered by them - didn't scratch at them. We gave her an oatmeal bath and things cleared up dramatically by the end of Wednesday - couldn't even see any spots by Thursday. Was it the pox? She had the pox immunization shot which is supposed to be pretty effective, although we hear you can still catch it and it was going around in Miles room at daycare... Oh well - a chance to spend a "stay home day" with Kate I guess.

Construction Week at Daycare
Ok... so Lisa is still laughing at me now and saying just go to bed! I've just spent a couple of hours printing off pictures from the construction visits I've made to the Art Building project I'm working on. This week is "Construction" week at daycare and so Miles' teachers asked if I could bring in some plans or other things related to construction for them to "show and share" since I am involved in this stuff as an architect. I was excited about this from the beginning - thinking about all the "neat" things I could bring in for them to look at... So I started printing off photos and making copies of plans.... Then it began to dawn on me (with Lisa's help of course) that I don't have the faintest clue about what a 4-year-old would really be interested in. So I had to change my approach... What exactly will be the topic for the week? Construction? And what will these youngster's get out of a bunch of plans of a building that most adults won't even understand.
Construction week has made me stop and think about just how abstract this whole architecture business really is.... I mean - who really understands a plan anyway... it's the building in the end after it finally gets built before anyone really starts to understand these things. So now I have a bunch of pictures... starting with digging out the site for the foundations where what I realize now is that the kids will really just be interested in the "diggers" and bulldozers and the big hole in the ground....Anyway.... who cares about footings and foundations right? No one ever sees these things anyway right? Well, I have them anyway for Miles to take along with the pictures of the structural steel (the bones of the building is a good start I suppose for explaining what structural steel is to a 4-year-old right?) - Welding, trusses, cranes, concrete plank and more pictures of guys in "cherry pickers" hoisting the prefab walls into place. I even went so far as to create an index to the photos so that the teachers can read what the heck the picture is about. I can almost see the kid's eyes glazing over in wonderment now - the fidgeting of boredom.... the poke in the back to the kid in the front row from the kid in the back row who's not the teacher's pet. Miles doesn't have a front row seat. So I'm counting on him keeping the interest peaked with phases like " look at those anchor bolts and base plates... they look terrible.... how are they ever going to get that structural frame plumbed up?" Yeah right.... Miles' will be poking the kid in front of him I can tell.... So how do you explain what an architectural plan is to a kid anyway? I guess that's something I should sit down with Miles and learn too. I just hope that hard hat of mine is enough to keep him from getting picked on because he has such a nerdy dad! Best of Luck - Miles !

Juicy Juice
Miles' Favorite animal... the Shark
Shark bait
Miles has this thing for sharks lately... His favorite toy is this shark. It all started with the movie Nemo... where "Bruce" is one of his favorite characters. Most of us with kids will understand the fascination that develops around this character because at first this shark character is scary and of course dangerous in the ocean right? But it turns out that Bruce is a kind and gentle shark that is on a 10 step process to get out of the habit of eating his "friends". So anyway, now Miles loves to pretend this shark is Bruce and runs around the house chasing Kate and she loves to play the part - squealing with delight at the fact her brother just wants to chase her.
Birthday Celebrations
Tonight we got together with Rod, Leah and family and enjoyed dinner. Marv and Fran came down to visit so we all had a chance to catch up. It's a full house when we're all together and it gets pretty loud of course. The kids love getting together though and I can remember a lot of fun times with all my cousins when I was growing up on the farm. It's time well spent. We all celebrated Brenna and Emily's upcoming birthdays with cake and ice cream... Nick kept getting "freezer head". More to follow...

Niebuhr / Schettler Photo Journal
Ok, here goes another try at keeping up a blog of photos of the family. The last blog was lost (blog service just disappeared) so I'm trying this again with the hopes (and backup) that this is better than emailing a bunch of images out all the time. I hope you enjoy browsing through the collections and please feel free to post comments - that's the whole idea of this thing. Alright... most of this will probably end up being pictures with captions - nothing too significant here... just "life".
All the best - happy blogging!
Here's a link to my other blog.... it's more about my personal interests in photos - images and such ....
